A Review of the Arcade Game Defend Your Castle

Article by SOBF

Defend Your Castle is a game about defense which puts your mouse speed and agility skills into test. The objective of the game is basically to guard your castle from invaders. In order to get rid of enemy units, you must drag them by clicking and holding the left mouse button and throwing them off in midair. Dropping your enemies too low will not strike them out. Hitting the P key will suspend and continue the game. At the end of each stage, your points will be tallied and you will be given the option to upgrade and repair your castle.

Spendable points are used for upgrades and repairs of your castle. You can have seven upgrades after each stage: repair allows you to fix the damages dealt by your enemies. 100 points replenishes 50 armor points, 500 points replenishes 250 armor points, and 2000 points replenishes 1000 armor points. Fortify raises your castle defense system paving the way for an increased armor bar and higher walls. 750 points increases the armor bar by 100 armor points, 7500 points increases the armor bar by 1000 armor points. Temple permits you to switch enemy units to your cause by gently throwing them off in your castle. It costs 5000 spendable points. Archery range allows you to train converted enemies into archers by clicking the red flag. It costs 8000 spendable points. Demolition lab allows you to deploy dynamite strapped converts by clicking them beneath the armor bar. Clicking the kamikazee blows up the dynamites. It costs 15000 spendable points. Workshop lets you subject craftsmen into training, which repairs damage automatically. It costs 25000 spendable points. Manapool enables you to train wizards, which can draw various spells.

The mana bar indicates the extent mana you have to cast spells. Spells light up when you can cast them. Training more wizards enhances your maximum amount of mana and also enhances the regeneration rate of the mana bar. Wizards can cast three kinds of spells: Kill which kills enemy units right away and is equivalent to 300 mana points. It is activated by clicking 1 or a. Detonate yields an explosion at once killing enemy units within the blast radius and is equal to 800 mana points. It is activated by clicking 2 or s. Conversion instantly transforms an enemy to a convert and is equivalent to 2000 mana points. It converts faster than dragging your enemies to your castle. Manapool costs 40000 spendable points.

The graphics of the game can be adjusted from low and high quality. The audio can be toggled on and off. Defend Your Castle is a challenging game because you must be fast in tossing your opponents in the air. Unluckily, you cannot adjust the difficulty level of the game. The game’s graphics is very cartoon like but overall it is a good game to test your mouse skills.

Games Workshop question by Odetta Fujimura: Will Games Workshop ever release dungeonquest again?
I played dungeonquest with my brother when I was a kid. It was really fun, but now it’s hard to get. Wish I could buy it from Amazon.

Games Workshop best answer:

… sociable strategy games, such as Acquire, Ticket to Ride, Power Grid, Puerto Rico, and Pillars of the Earth.

However, i’ll bet you can find a seller through www.boardgamegeek.com

Everything will be “used”, but it may still be servicable. Ifyou’re patient, or if you have enough to spend, you can get the base game and all the expansion packs.

Or, contact the game manufacturer and ask them if they’ll be re-releasing the game.
