My 25 Most Influencial Games

Gaming

I’ve been doing a lot of research on my past gaming experiences in relation to a series of blog articles I’ve been writing lately.

Today I decided that it would be a good idea to gather all of the games that have influenced me the most and print them out as a poster for my office wall.

After printing it out I took it around and questioned some of my work mates on their gaming history; no one got all of them, can you?

  1. Jeff Croft says:

I can’t name very many of them, but I think this is a cool idea.

I’m not sure it would work for me, though. If I made a poster like this, it’d consist of:

    Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater
    Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2
    Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3
    Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4
    Tony Hawk’s Underground
    Tony Hawks’ Underground 2

So in the end, I don’t think it would be that interesting, :)

  2. josue salazar says:

Tony Hawk’s on my list aswell.
All that comes to my mind right now though, is Super Mario World on the SNES. What a game!

  3. Paolo.Pace says:

    Flashback
    Unreal
    Half-Life 1& 2
    Monkey Island
    Full Throttle
    Wolfenstein
    Anachronox
    Doom

These are the ones I recognize because I played them. Others are a combination of having read other people’s answers, so I’ve left those out.

  4. Little Dragon says:

    NES classics?

    SMB??

  5. Vic says:

Er, I can’t see Starquake. Nice choice tho.

  6. KimmoA says:

    Doom! I see DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

BTW… having to sign up for some blogger service to comment sucks.

  7. traveller_sam says:

Tomb Raider 2. Best version ever.
3 and 4 are also nice. Then this thing is getting really bad.

  8. Bryan Veloso says:

I’m sorta biased in this comment, but I would have included one of the Final Fantasy games if I were making a poster like this. :]

  9. Isaack says:

    I see,

    1.1 Deus Ex, 1.2 1.3 Wing Commander (3?) 1.4 Wolfenstein 1.5 Another World
    2.1 Beneath a Steel Sky? 2.2 Flashback 2.3 Doom 2.4 Beneath a Steel Sky 2? 2.5 Omikron?
    3.1 Descent 3.2? 3.3 Monkey Island 3.4 Half Life2? 3.5 Half Life
    4.1 Civilisation? 4.2 ? 4.3 Outcast 4.4 Halo 4.5 Bladerunner
    5.1? 5.2? 5.3 Unreal 5.4 Full Throttle 5.5 Star Wars?

Heh, had it been some years ago, I would have named them all, it’s a good thing that most of them are old timers :)

So, are you gonna fill in the blanks Michael :)

  10. datoh says:

    1.2 Ultima 6?
    2.5 Deus Ex?
    4.2 Dreamweb (great !!!)
    5.2 DOTT

  11. leo.prie.to says:

Wow. Full Throttle! That was an amazing time for me. LucasArts blew me away with that one. Although Riven (which I don’t see there) was the only time I’ve locked myself in for a week and couldn’t stop living there.

  12. Mathias Bynens says:

(The link to the larger resolution image doesn’t quite work, you’ll have to remove the trailing dot.)

  13. Isaack says:

Nice use of picture tags! Daim! I was wrong about quite a few of them.

Thanks for the listing! Dreamweb sure sounds like a freaky game! And you are right about Outcast’s voxels, they were very impressive even in low resolution. A shame that the technique never caught on, it could really have been interesting. And we would probably have machines with 4GB of RAM by now, hehe.

  14. kilikina says:

    WHAT? NO CS? :)

  15. Ravensky says:

No, no CS. Counter Strike is where smacktards and cussing racial idiots are born.

  16. scionga says:

Man, i so agree with the DIG. I wish there were more games like it. I still play it once every two years or so.

  17. waxpancake says:

Heavy on the Lucasarts! Great to see Dreamweb, Another World (aka Out of this World), and Flashback getting their due. All were excellent games.

  18. Hans_ says:

No Quake 3? Ok, not any LAN Games =)

  19. Jonnalicious says:

You haven’t finished Flashback yet?! You’ve had 13 years for gods sake! ;)

  20. Tom (hmm a rosa tint) says:

Flashpoint is very fun, I thought you might have added some C&C games? Red Alert was a big fav for me.

  21. Elke & Sven says:

suprises me you finished some of these games i never could, and didn’t finish one of the few i did ;) day of the tentacle that is. finish it, it’s hella funny :D

  22. loadedrealityflickrfix says:

    Excitebike (NES)
    Sacrifice (PC)
    Super Mario Brothers 3 (NES)
    Gran Turismo (PS)

    - They all would have to me on my list, it just wouldn’t be ‘gaming’ without them.

  23. Dr-Leech says:

Dreamweb was a really great game!
and Id Software ones too. Nice collection.
But do you forget Maniac Mansion?

  24. xtrarant says:

My list would include King’s Quest III. Of course, maybe you kids these days never played that one. ;) (God I’m only 27 an dremembring things that some on here probably too young to know)

  25. javajive says:

Zelda did it for me back in the day. Mario Kart provided endless hours of wasted brain cells.

Pitfall was the shit back in ’84 (i was only 7)

  26. [Vidar] says:

I’ve played and finished most of those, really great selection.
Personally Deus Ex made me blow chunks, I would replace it with Planescape: Torment any day, or some other black isle release

  27. finkelbot says:

Nice list. Some definite classics. I was surprised that you included one of my all-time favorites, however I must correct the name. It was "Out Of This World," not "Another World." It was perhaps the most compelling story I’ve ever seen in a game. The only obvious hole in your list, in my opinion, is the all-time uber classic: Star Control 2.

  28. Michael Heilemann says:

I must correct the name. It was "Out Of This World," not "Another World."

Not entirely true; you see it was called both. In the US market it was sold as ‘Out of This World’ and in the European and Australian markets it was ‘Another World’.

I chose to call it Another World because a) it’s what I knew it as, b) it’s a European production and finally c) it got the title ‘Out of This World’ due to a TV show running in the US at the time of release, which was called ‘Another World’. So to avoid confusion–even though the TV show had nothing to do with the game–they renamed it. Of course they forgot to check the market properly; a sci-fi show happened to also run in the US at the time with the title ‘Out of This World’.

    So yeah.

  29. [Vidar] says:

Did you ever play the sequel to this game? It was called Heart Of The Alien.
I remember playing it on the sega genesis/megadrive but I dont know if there was a pc version.

  30. Mitch Dietrick says:

best you can do is find a laptop with the i3-2310M or i5-2410M and use the Intel HD graphics

    or

check the used market for something with a discrete graphics card.

Gaming laptops start at about $ 650.
