Online Gaming Better Than Offline Games?

Gaming

New Game :) What does a Scrabble game you played in tell about yourself?

Gaming

I loved this board because I got to start it with the word gnosis.

So! Everyone who sees this (and who enjoys games) . . .
1. Play a game of Scrabble–against yourself if you have to.
2. Take a shot of the final board.
3. Tell us something it shows about you (and, if you like, and you played against someone else, tell us something it showed about your opponent.)
4. Invite others to join in. :)

Online Gaming Better Than Offline Games?

Article by Firefall The Game

What makes online gaming so exciting and fun? Is it any more fun and enjoyable than the old fashion local offline games of years past? There are quite a few gamers in this day and age who will attest to the idea that online gaming has gotten to be huge. In the realm of Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and modern Pcs, there are a quite a high number of players that love their gaming, and love playing them online with hundreds, and even thousands of other players across the world.

What makes these types of games so much more exciting than playing a game by yourself in front of the television or computer monitor? Sure, many of these games, whether they are single-player, local multiplayer or online multiplayer love their games. But there is something to be said about being able to play these games online with other people that just scream something different. As a gamer myself, I like to know that even though I am physically in the room by myself playing something like Call of Duty or Battlefield, it’s good to know that I can hop online at anytime and play against living breathing opponents that act and react differently than any AI character from any kind of game. There is that human element.

Gone are the days when we have to be confined to a single room, crowed around a single television set. Many would consider that type of scenario a nerd’s world where nothing but a bunch of girlfriendless guys are smack talking to each other from across the couch. Now there is more of a freedom that can be had when playing with your friend from across town or from another part of the country or the opposite end of the world.

One case in point is the game FireFall from the game company Red 5 Studios. As a new game that is currently in Beta testing, FireFall is a game that features both a large, open world cooperative campaign that can be shared with hundreds of other players. The game also features a competitive multiplayer component that incorporates clans, leagues, ladders and tournaments. Because of this type of online multiplayer, also known as an MMO or MMOG, which is short for Massively Multiplayer Online Game. With this sort of game it moves past just playing with 5, 10, or 16 random players like you may see in games like Call of Duty where you may get up to 32 players at a single time.

With an increase in the overall numbers of players that you can play with and interact with in a game like FireFall or other games like World of Warcraft and EVE Online, there are so many more possibilities at your disposal for online multiplayer fun. Being able to interact with a high number of players at the moment I log into a game like the ones I mentioned really give me more to do. It increases my chances of being able to work with more people, meet more people and make new friends. Imagine going into a virtual game town where most of the characters in that town are actual living people, and not just CPUs. You can talk with them, play with them. Those are things you can’t do in games that feature only local multiplayer, or only those online games that have a small player cap for every game session .

    I’ll start:

    About me:
    1. Gnosis reminds me of course of the gnostics and of any interesting not-well-known subject.
    2. Newts remind of the Bertie and Jeeves TV shows.
    3. I like funny words such as goon.

    My opponent:
    1. Knowledgeable in different fields (i.e. words made included fugue and arid).
    2. A nice person who let me put "ok" even though it probably should have been "okay".

What a well-balanced board with great words. I love Scrabble. Haven’t played for ages though!

Looks like fun. I do love Scrabble but have no one to play with. Interesting board there. Now, it would be even more fun to put those words into a short paragraph!

    How about this:

I felt faint of heart and had almost entered a fugue state when the newt, the beaver, and the goon came to the door and made a din. After gaining entry, the trio tried to lure me into a intellectual hive of teleological speculation as they waved an arid tome dealing with gnosis, all the while exhibiting what seemed excessive zeal tinged with spite and malicious joy . . .

I love Scrabble! Growing up, we would have family tournaments, and the love for the game remains today. Very nice image, Jan. I wish I had not given my game to neighbors. If another comes along, I will certainly take a shot.

Neat game:) Scrabble is one of my favorite games. My husband and I are going to do this, but it will probably be this weekend before we get a chance. It has been quite some time since we have played a game of Scrabble.

  20. NiCaM55 says:

I love words and reading and such…but I’ve never liked scrabble…probably because the boards I’ve played NEVER look like this…we end up in one tiny area of the board…maybe we just don’t know how to play! GREAT SHOT…

Everyone, looking forward to seeing some Scrabble boards soon. It seems to me the MOST interesting part will be your comments on your boards, not so much the boards themselves. :)

  24. tomswift46 (No Groups with Comments) says:

My wife and I play Scrabble over the summer…combined points and Win/Losses are our 2 criteria and we usually are very close in both.
We love words and the strategy is always fun.
We have learned that we are competitive and fair and not bloodthirsty players. We allow 1 free lookup a turn before any challenge and there is almost never the necessity for a challenge…

  25. garlandcannon says:

tomswift46, I like you all’s idea for 1 free lookup. Do you all ever wish you could include non-English words? (I enjoyed your bilingual poem Madrugada.)

I just looked up Spanish Scrabble on amazon and here was an idea one person posted that I think is great:
"If the [person] plays an English word they receive the normal amount of points. If the [person] plays a Spanish word he/she receives double the point value in addition to any extra points offered by the squares on the board."

  26. garlandcannon says:

Here’s another Scrabble idea from Lara’s Stuff:

Add up the number of points in your name.

    For example, I’m Jan.
    J is 8, A is 1, and N is 1. So that makes me a perfect 10, I guess! :)

  27. Lara's Stuff says:

great idea! when i get home i am pulling out the scrabble! : )

Im loving this laptop. I was looking for something small to surf the web, project stuff on powerpoint, and play games from time to time. I chicked out a lot of net books.

I was close to getting the Eeepc 1215 dual core atom with Ion graphics for 499. This laptop was $775. After a lot of research I decided to get the considerable extra power this laptop offers. Im glad I did! This laptop runs stuff great, boots quick, and handles Dragon Age origns, portal and civ 5 just fine (though civ struggles with high settings. Most games run great on this with mid to high settings.

I love plugging it into my TV via HDMI and using a wireless mouse/ keyboard. Bliss!

This is a well built little laptop. It feels really solid, and seems like it will be able to handle the little bumps and bruises it may get while on the road.

Downside? Hmm… I would have loved for it to be even lighter. It is 4.5 pounds. I also would have liked Nvidia optimus auto switching, but switching the graphics is just an FN+F6 away.

Dell offers more powerfull configurations (i3, i5, i7) for more money, and you can get the base model of this laptop for 599 a limited time. The current price on amazon is still a solid deal with the 320 gig drive, and 4 gigs of ram, no tax and free shipping.

Overall I am very, very satisfied with this laptop. If you want to be able to play games, and have an ultraportable sized laptop, this is hard to beat. And it has an awesome backlit keyboard!

Good specs/performance, but cant recommend because of defective hinge design., March 14, 2011

I bought my M11x directly from dell, when it first came out. I beefed up the specs getting the dual core, biggest HDD and more memory etc. The computer for its size was/is a powerful rig. It plays some of the most recent titles when adjusting the settings properly and it makes for great portable entertainment. Selling point obviously is its reduced size without compromising performance.

After just a couple of months I found out that this laptop suffers a terrible design defect.. the hinges break after some usage (even after a few months!). It is an issue that is very well documented, look it up online! It doesn’t matter if you’re the most careful person with your laptop (like I am) you WILL still experience the issue because the hinges are flawed!!!!

I paid top dollar for this computer (specially because I beefed up the specs), and I’m so disappointed at dell for selling defective hardware. Alienware is not what it used to be any more. I don’t think I will be buying an Alienware any more or at least not one that has not been extensively reviewed and tested by someone else. I will stick to ASUS for some time, they seem to be getting a lot of things right lately (I’m a proud owner of a G53jx3de and it rocks!!!).

Well, If you are talking about SDRAM, DDR2, and DDR3, you may (not a yes, but a may) be able to notice the difference between SDRAM and DDR3. I have 10gb of DDR3, so i never had to deal with RAM issues. I would get the max amount of DDR2 because its cheaper.
